This guide is for US shoppers weighing a made-to-order sofa or sectional from BenchMade Modern (benchmademodern.com). It covers the store: how long orders take, how delivery works, what happens if something arrives damaged, and how returns and fees work on custom pieces. It is not a review of the products; we have not tested any product. Policies change, so read the current pages before you pay.

Quick answer
- Lead time: the store says production usually takes 2 to 5 weeks, then delivery follows. Its holiday notice says most pieces are built in about 3 weeks.
- Delivery: you pick threshold delivery (boxed, to your door) or white glove (carried in, unwrapped, packaging removed). Shipping fees are not refunded.
- Returns: made-to-order upholstery has a 14-day full-refund window (minus shipping) and a 100-day window with a 10% processing fee. Smaller items have a shorter 30-day window.
- Damage: inspect at delivery and report within 48 hours. The store says it repairs first and replaces only if repair is not possible.
- Verdict: a real company with detailed written policies. The fees, the one-return-per-household rule and some inconsistencies between its own pages are the points to read closely.

Who runs BenchMade Modern
The terms of service name BenchMade Modern, LLC, with a Dallas, Texas address, and say the site is meant for US residents. The About page calls it a custom-furniture brand using American manufacturing (the company's own description). The domain benchmademodern.com was registered on 5 February 2014 (Verisign RDAP, read 26 Oct 2026).
Assembly and damage
Upholstered pieces arrive boxed. With threshold delivery, the crew brings the box to your door or the first dry area, garage or lobby of a building. With white glove, a two-person team carries the piece in, places it in your room, unwraps and sets it up, and hauls away packaging. The store recommends white glove for sofa beds, leather and larger pieces. It covers up to two flights of stairs.
On damage, the FAQ says to inspect at delivery, write any damage on the delivery paperwork, and report it to the store within 48 hours with photos of the damage and of the whole piece. You may refuse a piece with major visible damage, though the store notes most damage is easy to repair. Its stated policy is to repair first, supplying a replacement part and a repair specialist, and to replace the piece only if an inspection finds it cannot be repaired. If you think the wrong item was made, the FAQ also gives 48 hours.
Measure before you order; the store says to check doorways, halls and elevators, and it does not remove old furniture. See Buying furniture online: measure and delivery.
Shipping and delivery
Lead time. The FAQ says production generally runs 2 to 5 weeks, shown on each product page, and the checkout gives an estimated delivery window. A backordered fabric shows a later date. The holiday notice gives order-by dates of 13 October (before Thanksgiving) and 10 November (before 24 December) for 3-week pieces, and says dates are not guaranteed.
Fees in the 48 contiguous states (store's FAQ):
- Standard delivery: $29 to $89, by order total, only for orders without made-to-order or large items.
- Threshold: $149 up to $2,999; $249 from $3,000 to $6,999; $349 from $7,000.
- White glove: $299, $399 or $499 on the same bands.
Scheduling. After the truck reaches a local warehouse, the team calls to book a four-hour window, Monday to Friday. Confirm within 5 to 7 business days; delays or a missed appointment can bring non-refundable storage or redelivery fees.
Other items. Rugs, lamps and small tables ship by FedEx or UPS, usually in 1 to 3 weeks, outside the white-glove service.
Alaska and Hawaii. Shipping is possible for most orders with extra fees and curbside service only, but the store says those orders are non-returnable. Canada is also listed as non-returnable.
Returns and refunds
For made-to-order upholstery, the store gives a refund of the amount paid less the shipping fee if the return starts within 14 days of delivery. From day 15 to day 100 it deducts a 10% return processing fee as well. Rugs, furniture and lamps get 14 days, then up to 30 days with the 10% fee. Items must be new and unused, and the refund comes after the piece is back and inspected.
Conditions that can surprise buyers:
- One return per household. This covers a whole order, not one item. An exchange order then becomes non-returnable.
- No-fit deliveries. If a piece cannot be delivered because it does not fit, a $400 processing fee is deducted.
- Cancellations. The FAQ allows changes and cancellations without fees in the first 24 hours; later ones cost 10%, plus $400 after shipment.
The store says return pickup is free and approval is at its discretion.
What shoppers say
- Trustpilot (read 26 Oct 2026): a single 2-star review, dated 7 May 2026, on an unclaimed profile. The reviewer liked the fabric, ordering and delivery but said a sectional corner leg broke within a year, called the frame cheap, and described a slow warranty repair. One review cannot show a pattern.
- SmartCustomer shows no reviews (read 26 Oct 2026).
- Review blogs: some sofa-review sites reported 3 to 5 week lead times. They are mostly affiliate-style, so we treat them as secondhand opinion.
We found no BBB page or Reddit threads for the furniture brand.
Verdict
BenchMade Modern looks like an operating US furniture company with clear fee tables and a long return window for custom upholstery. The cost of changing your mind is real: the shipping fee is lost, a 10% fee applies after 14 days, and a no-fit return can cost $400. Independent review evidence is thin, so rely on the written terms. Do not order against a hard deadline.
Checklist before you order
- Measure doors, halls, stairs and elevators against the box and piece sizes.
- Choose white glove if you need placement and unwrapping; check your stairs against the two-flight limit.
- Note the product page's lead time and the checkout delivery window, and ask in writing before a date that matters.
- Be reachable to book delivery within 5 to 7 business days of the call.
- Inspect on arrival, note damage on the paperwork and email photos within 48 hours.
- Understand the 14-day versus 100-day return costs, and the one-return rule.
- Ask support which cancellation window applies.
What we could not confirm
- Independent customer-service quality: only one review exists, and BBB or Reddit data was not found.
- Cancellation timing: the refund policy page says 48 hours, while the FAQ says 24 hours. Refund timing also differs between the refund page (5 to 7 business days) and the FAQ (10 to 15 business days for the return process). The FAQ also gives both info@ and help@ addresses for damage reports.
- The separate Returns and Exchanges page, which we did not read as its own page; we relied on the FAQ and refund policy pages.
- Certification claims on product pages, and payment methods at checkout.
