This guide is for anyone about to buy merino socks or base layers from smartwool.com and wondering about returns, the guarantee and delivery. It is not a review of the products. We have not tested any product, and we do not say whether the socks or clothing are good. Policies change, so read the live pages before you pay.

Quick answer
- Real, long-running brand: the domain dates from 1996 and the terms name VF Outdoor, LLC as the US operator.
- Returns: the store's returns page says 30 days from purchase, free, for unused, unwashed and unaltered items. Refunds can take up to 3-5 weeks.
- Guarantee: a separate two-year guarantee; approved claims are paid as digital gift cards, per its page.
- Shipping: $7 standard (4-7 business days), free on orders of $89 or more at the time we read the page.
- Verdict: a legitimate brand store with clear written policies. The weak spot is customer service speed, according to Trustpilot reviewers, and the store's pages disagree on whether exchanges exist.

Who runs Smartwool
The Terms of Use say SMARTWOOL is a division of VF Outdoor, LLC in the United States and of VF Outdoor Canada Co. They list VF Corporation in Denver, Colorado as a contact address. The domain was registered in November 1996, per the registry lookup we read.
The BBB search page we read lists a Denver entry at D- and two Ontario entries at D+, none accredited. It showed no complaint counts, so we cannot say what drives those grades.
Sizing and fit
The store's size page says its socks run true to size and tells you to pick by total foot length (and calf size for compression socks). For clothing it asks for body measurements: chest, waist, hip, arm and inseam, with a short how-to for each. It lists men's sizes S-XXL and women's and kids' sizes XS-XL, says there are no petite or big and tall sizes, and says it does not do alterations.
We have not tested any product and only repeat the store's description. If you are between sizes, go by the measurements, not the size you wear in another brand.
Shipping and delivery
The shipping page we read lists these US options: standard at $7 in 4-7 business days, express at $17.50 in 2 business days, and priority at $25 for next-day delivery. It says free standard shipping applies to orders of $89 or more "currently", so the offer can change. Standard ground does not ship to Alaska and Hawaii, while express and overnight do. Some options are marked as unavailable there, so check checkout.
Standard orders placed by 6pm Eastern ship the next business day; express and priority orders placed by 1pm Eastern ship the same day, and neither goes to PO boxes. There is no weekend delivery. PO box and APO orders go by USPS, others by FedEx or USPS. The store says it cannot guarantee arrival dates. This guide covers the US store only.
Returns and refunds
The returns page says Smartwool offers free returns within 30 days of purchase. Items must be unused, unwashed and unaltered. You start at the Order Status page with your order number and the purchaser's last name. If you have no printer, you can pick a QR-code option and have a FedEx Office print the label at no charge. After the warehouse reviews the package, the refund goes to the original payment method (a gift card if one paid), and you get an email. The page says this may take up to 3-5 weeks.
Other points from that page:
- For a 3-pack or 4-pack of socks you must send back every pair; partial returns are not allowed.
- Online returns only apply to items bought on smartwool.com. TikTok Shop orders must be returned through TikTok.
A conflict in the store's own pages: the returns page says to return unworn items to the store where you bought them "for a refund or exchange", and the size page says the satisfaction promise gives you an exchange or refund. But the returns page also states for smartwool.com purchases that exchanges are not available. So if you need a different size, expect to return and reorder. Confirm with customer service before you rely on an exchange.
The two-year guarantee is separate. The guarantee page says that if you are not completely happy with gear within two years of purchase, the company will get you into new gear. You fill in a form, include four photos (the full product, the problem area and the receipt) and the four-digit date code from the tag if there is one. For US purchases the page says sending the product back is no longer required, though it may ask. Approved claims are paid as digital gift cards. It does not cover items from unauthorized sellers or the brand's thredUP resale listings.

What shoppers say
On Trustpilot (read 26 October 2026) Smartwool shows 3.1 out of 5 from 142 reviews: 15% five-star and 71% one-star. The profile was claimed in April 2026, and Trustpilot shows 32 reviews in the last 12 months, with the newest dated 22 October 2026. Trustpilot notes the company has not recently invited reviews, so the page may not represent all customers.
Positive reviewers mention durability and comfort, and some praise service. Negative reviewers describe slow shipping (FedEx is named), cancelled orders, a site that did not work, trouble finding some sizes, and rude or unhelpful service. Some say the guarantee process asked for proof more than once. These are customer opinions we cannot verify. Trustpilot says the company replied to 41% of negative reviews, often with a template.
Verdict
Smartwool is a real, long-established brand with a clear 30-day return rule and a documented two-year guarantee. Nothing we read points to a fake store. The risks are practical: refunds can be slow, exchanges may not exist online, guarantee claims pay out as gift cards, and Trustpilot's one-star share is high. If you may return something, be ready to wait weeks for the money. Buy only on smartwool.com or authorized retailers: a web search for returns pages also showed sites with look-alike names on unrelated domains, which we did not visit.
Checklist before you order
- Check the address bar: the store is smartwool.com. Ignore look-alike domains.
- Measure your foot length and use the size chart.
- Do not wash or wear anything you may return.
- Keep your order number and the last name on the order.
- For multipacks, plan to return every pair or none.
- Do not count on an exchange. If you want another size, ask customer service first.
- Keep the receipt, photos and tag date code in case you claim under the guarantee.
- Check the shipping options at checkout, especially for Alaska, Hawaii or PO boxes.
What we could not confirm
- Payment methods accepted: not read.
- Smartwool's privacy policy.
- BBB complaint counts and reasons for the grades.
- Reddit or Sitejabber feedback: none found that we could read; regional Trustpilot pages were not read in full.
- How the policies work in practice: we read only the written text.
- International shipping costs and rules for other country sites.
