How we calculate

The stones come from the American Gem Society's birthstone page, which lists the stones for each month. GIA's page for each month names the same stones. The Mohs hardness figures and care notes come from GIA's pages for each stone, shortened to one or two sentences.

  1. Month or stone. Pick a month to see its stones, or pick a stone to see its month.
  2. Hardness. The Mohs scale runs from 1 to 10 and measures resistance to scratching. A hard stone can still chip if it has poor toughness, so read the care note too.
  3. Ruby. GIA's ruby page calls its hardness second only to diamond but gives no Mohs figure, so we show none.
  4. Other lists. Birthstone lists differ between traditions and countries, and jewellers have added stones over time. If a shop lists a different stone for your month, that is a different list, not an error.
