Earrings are small, light and easy to ship, which makes them a popular online purchase. They are also hard to judge from a photo. Sizes look different on a screen, and the metal on the post can differ from the metal on the decorative part. These are the details worth checking.
Read the materials carefully
A listing may describe several materials at once: one for the front, another for the post or wire.
- Solid gold or sterling silver: the whole item is made of that metal. Look for the karat or purity marking in the description.
- Plated or vermeil: a thin layer of gold or silver over another metal. The layer wears with use, and the listing should say what is underneath.
- Gold-filled: a thicker layer bonded to a base metal.
- Stainless steel, titanium, niobium: common for posts and wires.
- "Alloy" or "base metal": a mix that is not specified. If the listing doesn't say what is in it, ask the seller.
If you are sensitive to certain metals, look for a clear statement of the post material rather than a general label, and ask the seller if it isn't given. For more on metal terms, see our guide to metals and hallmarks.
Sizes: use millimetres, not photos
Always compare the listed measurements against something you own.
- Drop length is how far an earring hangs below the earlobe. Measure an earring you already wear for comparison.
- Hoop diameter is measured across the widest point of the hoop, not the thickness of the wire.
- Stud size is the width of the decorative front. A few millimetres changes the look a lot.
- Weight matters for large earrings. If the listing gives grams, heavy pieces can feel uncomfortable over several hours.
Closures and backs
| Type | Good to know |
|---|---|
| Push-back (butterfly) | The most common; can loosen over time |
| Screw-back | More secure, often used for valuable studs |
| Leverback or lever closure | Closes over the wire and suits drop earrings |
| Hinged hoop or snap-down post | Easy to put on, check the snap feels firm |
| Clip-on | Works without pierced ears; check the pad and spring for comfort |
If you lose backs often, consider replacement backs in a better material or style.
Before you order
- Check whether the earrings are sold as a pair or a single piece.
- Look at the return policy. Some shops do not accept returns on pierced earrings for hygiene reasons, so check this first.
- Look for photos on a real ear or hand, with a size reference.
- Check packaging if you are buying a gift, and whether a gift note is available.
- Keep the receipt and the description in case the listing's materials don't match what arrives.
The short version
Read what the post and the front are made of, compare millimetre sizes with earrings you own, pick a closure you will actually use, and check the return policy before you pay.
