How we calculate

We convert your size to a foot length in millimetres, then to each system. Formulas: UK adult = 3 x foot length in inches minus 23 (one step is a third of an inch); US men's = UK + 1; US women's = men's + 1.5 (the common retail convention); EU = 1.5 x foot length in cm + 2, plus about 1 on adult shoes because that is what shops print; Japan = foot length in cm to the nearest 0.5; Australia = UK for men and kids, US for women.

Three worked examples. A US men's 9 is UK 8 and a foot of (8 + 23) / 3 = 10.33 in or 262 mm; the EU label is 42.5 (the formula gives 41.4) and Japan is 26 cm. A UK women's 5 is US 7.5 (UK + 2.5) and a 237 mm foot. An EU 42 on men's shoes is formula EU 41, a 260 mm foot, UK 7.5 and US 8.5.

Kids' sizes use the UK child scale (0 to 13.5) and then UK youth 1 and up. US kids' sizes are about UK + 0.5 in trade practice, with differences of up to half a size between brands, so treat them as a starting point and measure the foot.

We could not read the ISO 19407 conversion standard or the ISO 9407 Mondopoint text (both are paid). The formulas come from published summaries and are checked against Start-Rite and Nike charts: UK sizes and Mondopoint match within about 2 mm of foot length, while EU adult labels run about one size above the formula and US women's offsets differ by half a size between makers.

ItemRule
Foot length is the common threadEvery system is a way of counting foot length in steps. Mondopoint (ISO 9407) is simply the foot length in mm, usually in 5 mm steps. The tool converts your size to a foot length first, then to each system.
UKOne step is 1/3 inch (a barleycorn). Adult size = 3 x foot length in inches minus 23. Child sizes run 0 to 13.5 (size = 3 x inches minus 10), then the scale restarts at adult 1 (an 8 in or 203 mm foot).
US and CanadaMen's = UK + 1. Women's = men's + 1.5 (= UK + 2.5), the common retail convention; some makers and the Brannock device use + 1. Kids' sizes are about UK + 0.5 in trade practice. Canada follows the US.
EU (Paris points)One step is 2/3 cm. Foot length formula: EU = 1.5 x foot length in cm + 2. Adult shoes in shops are usually labelled about one size higher than that formula, so the tool shows the label size and notes the formula value.
Australia and New ZealandMen's and kids' sizes match the UK; women's sizes match US women's, by trade convention. We found no standards body that publishes this.
JapanSize in cm is the foot length, usually rounded to 0.5 cm. Brand labels can run slightly larger.
Where charts disagreeEU adult labels differ from the formula by about a size, women's US offsets differ by half a size, and kids' US sizes differ by up to half a size. Brands also use their own lasts, so use the brand's own chart when it has one.

ISO 19407:2023 is the official conversion standard but is paid; we could not read it. The formulas come from published summaries and checked against brand charts.

Measuring your foot
ItemRule
WhenMeasure late in the day, when feet are largest, standing, in the socks you will wear.
HowStand on paper with your heel against a wall, mark the longest toe, and measure heel to mark in mm. Do both feet and use the larger one.
WidthWrap a tape around the widest part of the foot. Wide feet or thick socks usually need a half size up or a wide fitting; a half size up in the same width may not fix width.
KidsAllow about 10 to 15 mm of toe room (APMA) and re-measure toddlers every 6 to 8 weeks and older children every 2 to 3 months (Royal College of Podiatry). Some makers already build growing room into their sizes.
