- Under CAD 20 on mail, or CAD 40 by courier from the US or Mexico, nothing is charged.
- Over the limit, duty applies and your province's GST or HST is added.
- Since 8 September 2026 a surtax applies to many US-made goods: check the lists.
How we calculate
We take the item price and shipping you enter, the category and the origin, and apply the destination's published rules.
- Value. The UK and Ireland use price plus shipping. Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US use the goods price for duty.
- Duty. The typical rate for the category from the official tariff, or 0% when a trade agreement may apply (it needs proof of origin). The US adds its extra tariff by origin.
- Tax. VAT or GST on the value plus duty. Under each country's limit the seller normally charges it at checkout.
- Fees. A typical published carrier handling fee, and government charges where they exist.
Your exact duty rate depends on the product's tariff code. Use the official lookup linked under the rules to check it. Amounts are in the destination's currency, so enter the price in that currency.
The rules we use
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| CAD 20 or less | No duty and no tax on mail from anywhere, and on courier parcels from outside the US and Mexico. |
| From the US or Mexico by courier | No duty or tax up to CAD 40. Between CAD 40 and CAD 150 duty is free but GST/HST still applies. Over CAD 150 both apply. |
| Above the limits | Duty at the tariff rate on the goods value, then GST/HST on goods plus duty: 5% GST, or the HST rate in Ontario (13%) and the Atlantic provinces (14-15%). The CBSA collects provincial sales tax at the border only where the parcel is cleared in that province (CBSA memo D2-3-6), so in BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec the PST or QST may be charged separately. Canada Post adds CAD 9.95 per item; couriers add their own fee (FedEx: CAD 12 or 3.1%). |
| Surtax on US goods | Since 8 September 2026 a surtax of 15%, 25% or 50% applies to listed US-origin goods, even under the limits above. It covers many clothing items (T-shirts, sweaters, some coats and trousers), perfume and make-up, smartphones and most furniture. Footwear, jewellery, toys, laptops, headphones and books are not on the lists. This estimator does not add the surtax: check the lists. |
| Duty rates (typical, non-FTA origin) | Clothing 18%, shoes 18%, costume jewellery 8.5%, gold or silver jewellery about 6.5%, cosmetics 6.5%, furniture 9.5%, electronics 0%, toys 0%, books 0%. Goods from the US, Mexico, the UK and the EU are free if they qualify. |
Canada added a surtax on listed US-origin goods on 8 September 2026.
Checked on 27 October 2026.
