Carry-on bag size checker
Enter your bag's size, pick an airline and see whether it fits, with the airline's own limit.
Loading the calculator. Without JavaScript, open the rules below.
- Airlines set their own limits, and the IATA 56 x 45 x 25 cm figure is only a guideline.
- Measure the whole bag with wheels, handles and pockets, as the airline's gauge does.
- Budget and basic fares can allow only a small personal item: check your fare.
How we calculate
We compare your bag with the airline's own published carry-on size. Orientation does not matter: we put your three measurements in order, longest to shortest, and do the same for the limit. The bag fits when each of the three is within the limit. The weight check applies only when the airline publishes a weight limit and you enter your bag's weight. If a fare includes no cabin bag (for example easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air and United Basic Economy on most trips), we check your bag against the free under-seat item instead and say so.
Three worked examples from the data:
- A 55 x 35 x 20 cm bag on Delta (limit 56 x 35 x 23 cm): every side is within the limit, so it fits.
- A 56 x 45 x 25 cm bag, IATA's general reference size, on Ryanair's paid cabin bag (55 x 40 x 20 cm): the long side is 1 cm over, the middle 5 cm over and the short 5 cm over, so it is too big.
- A 22 x 14 x 9 in bag on Southwest (24 x 16 x 10 in) fits with 2 in to spare on the long side. The same bag is 55.9 x 35.6 x 22.9 cm, which is over Qatar Airways' 50 x 37 x 25 cm on the long side, so it is too big there.
We copy each airline's numbers in the unit it publishes. Where an airline publishes only inches or only centimetres, the other unit is converted and marked as converted. Where an airline's page shows no weight limit, we say "no limit on the page we read", which is not the same as no limit. IATA's 56 x 45 x 25 cm figure is a general reference for airlines, not a rule, and the smaller 55 x 35 x 20 cm "Cabin OK" size was paused in 2015. Spirit Airlines stopped flying in May 2026, so it is not listed.

| Cabin OK (2015) | A different, smaller 55 x 35 x 20 cm size proposed in 2015 and paused by IATA on 17 June 2015. It is not the 56 x 45 x 25 figure. |

Limits change and some depend on the fare, route or aircraft. We copy each airline's own published figures and show the date we read them.
