Quick answer

  • Real business with a physical presence: the store lists a Portland, Oregon warehouse, an Oregon City retail shop, a phone number and an email address. The About page says it was founded in 1971.
  • Returns: refunds to the original payment method if the item is shipped back within 30 days of delivery; exchange or store credit only from day 31 to day 60.
  • Costs that surprise people: on customer-initiated returns the store says it deducts its original outbound shipping, even if shipping was free, plus return shipping.
  • Final-sale and no-return items: bikes, safety equipment, opened or activated electronics and installed items.
  • Verdict: the store looks like a genuine retailer, but Trustpilot feedback is poor on refunds and support, and the store's own pages contradict each other on some points. Read the return rules closely before ordering.

Who runs OMCgear

The About page says a group of climbers, skiers and outdoor fans founded Oregon Mountain Community (OMCgear) in Portland, Oregon in 1971, and that the company is locally owned and operated. The contact page lists the Oregon City shop with opening hours and a Portland warehouse with a phone number. The home page footer shows a government-sales email and a GSA contract number. The domain was registered in February 2008 (RDAP, read 26 October 2026). A search-result summary mentioned a BBB listing for Oregon Mountain Community Inc with an A+ rating, not accredited; we could not open that BBB page ourselves, so treat it as unconfirmed.

One Trustpilot reviewer claims the site is not affiliated with the original Oregon Mountain Community and resells returned gear. We found nothing on the store's pages to confirm or refute that.

Shipping and delivery

Per the shipping policy and the combined shipping and returns page (read 26 October 2026):

  • Orders over $100 get free economy ground shipping in the continental US for standard-size items.
  • Orders under $100 pay a flat $9.95 on the combined page; the shorter shipping policy says the charge is calculated at checkout. That is a small difference between pages.
  • Oversized, bulky or specialty items are excluded from free shipping.
  • Alaska, Hawaii, US territories and international orders may cost more.
  • Orders usually ship within 1 to 3 business days. Delivery estimates are for reference and not guaranteed. Expedited shipping shortens transit time only.
  • Packages marked delivered by the carrier count as delivered, and claims after that may be denied. Optional shipping protection covers transit loss or damage only.

Conflict: the reference shipping ranges differ between pages. The shipping policy lists bikes at $75 to $299 and roof racks at $30 to $200; the combined page lists bikes at $199 (with a higher figure for Alaska, Hawaii and territories) and roof racks at $30 to $350. We did not find shipping origin beyond the Portland warehouse address, and no stated delivery-time range.

Returns and refunds

  • Refund window: ship the item back within 30 days of delivery. A return request or label does not extend the deadline; the item must be handed to the carrier in time.
  • Days 31 to 60: exchange or store credit only. After 60 days no returns.
  • Condition: unused and resalable with packaging, tags and accessories. Footwear may be tried on indoors only.
  • Costs: you pay return shipping. For customer-initiated returns the store deducts its original outbound shipping, even on free-shipping orders. A prepaid label, if requested, is deducted from the refund. These deductions do not apply to store errors, verified defects or approved shipping-protection claims.
  • Refund method: original payment method; store credit by gift card if that is not possible.
  • Not returnable: bikes (final sale); climbing ropes, harnesses, helmets, carabiners and avalanche gear once shipped; opened or activated electronics (including GPS watches and similar devices); headphones once opened; worn hygiene items such as base layers; installed or mounted items such as vehicle racks.
  • Exchanges: one per purchase; the replacement then becomes final sale.

Conflict: the older Store Policies page says refunds apply within 30 days of purchase and mentions a restocking fee for used-looking items; the newer returns policy counts from delivery. The 30-days-from-delivery rule appears on the policy pages that look current, but the older page is still live. Defective items may go through the manufacturer's warranty instead of a store return.

What shoppers say

  • Trustpilot, omcgear.com: the page we read on 26 October 2026 showed a 1.7 out of 5 score and 800 reviews, but the star split shown (83 percent five-star) does not fit that score, so we cannot say which figure is right. The page says the company has not invited reviews recently and the newest visible review was 20 August 2026. Reviewers complain about refunds refused, delayed or reduced by shipping, items out of stock after payment, unresponsive email and a disconnected phone line. Some praise prices, quick shipping and helpful staff. These are customer opinions.

We could not read BBB, Reddit, SmartCustomer or Sitejabber pages for the online store.

Verdict

OMCgear appears to be a genuine, long-established outdoor retailer with a real address, but the online experience gets poor marks on Trustpilot for refunds and support, and the policy pages are strict and not fully consistent. Lower risk for standard items you are sure about; higher risk for anything you may need to return, final-sale items, or electronics.

Checklist before you order

  1. Check whether your item is on the final-sale or no-return list (bikes, safety gear, electronics, installed items).
  2. Work out the real cost of a return: return shipping plus the deducted outbound shipping.
  3. Photograph the product page, price and shipping line at checkout.
  4. Mark the day-30 and day-60 deadlines from the carrier delivery date.
  5. Open the box carefully; keep tags and packaging, and try shoes indoors only.
  6. Confirm stock by email if timing matters, since reviewers report out-of-stock cancellations.
  7. Pay with a card or method that offers dispute rights.
  8. For defects, ask the brand about its own warranty.

What we could not confirm

  • A reliable Trustpilot score (the page figures conflicted).
  • BBB details (we only saw a search summary), Reddit, SmartCustomer and Sitejabber pages.
  • Delivery-time ranges and where orders ship from beyond the Portland warehouse address.
  • Any store warranty beyond "manufacturer warranties are handled separately".
  • The full list of payment methods at checkout.
  • Whether the Trustpilot claim of no link to the original Oregon Mountain Community is right.
