This guide is for US shoppers considering Garden Goods Direct (gardengoodsdirect.com). One point first: on the pages we read, the store sells live plants (trees, shrubs, perennials) plus some garden supplies, not garden furniture or sheds. This is not a review of the plants or products: we have not tested any product. Policies change.

Quick answer
- It appears to be a real nursery business. The store gives a Maryland address, a phone number and a registered domain from 2016, and the BBB lists a matching business.
- Live plants cannot be returned. Instead there is a 30-day replacement promise, with conditions. Garden supplies can be returned within 60 days at your cost.
- Shipping is by FedEx Ground. It is free on orders of $99 or more and $24.95 below that. Optional shipping insurance and a paid 1-year warranty are sold separately.
- Reviews are strong overall but split on service. Trustpilot is 4.4 from 13,913 reviews, while some customers report slow replies on claims.
- Verdict: Legit by the evidence we found. The risk is in the claim process, so photograph everything and report problems fast.

Who runs Garden Goods Direct
The About page says the company owns and operates a large plant nursery and grows plants at its farm in Bowie, Maryland. It says it has been in business for three decades and names co-founder Richard Buller, who has more than 35 years in horticulture. The BBB lists "Garden Goods Direct" at 2410 N. Crain Hwy, Bowie, Maryland, under a profile named Patuxent Nursery LLC, rated A and not accredited. Domain records show gardengoodsdirect.com was registered on 29 July 2016, so the website is about ten years old.
Damage and the plant guarantee
For live plants, "assembly" becomes "arrival and survival." Here is what the pages say.
- Free 30-day promise. Every plant (except houseplants and annuals) is covered for 30 days from delivery. If it fails to thrive, the store replaces it once. You pay shipping on the replacement.
- What is excluded. Planting outside the recommended USDA zone, wrong location, weather, pests, drought, misused chemicals, and plants kept in pots. Plants must be in the ground.
- How to claim. Email from the address used for the order, with photos of the whole plant, the planting site, your name and order number.
- Optional 1-year warranty. It covers a one-time replacement in the first year. It must be bought at checkout and shipping is still your cost. The same exclusions apply.
- Transit damage. Report within 5 days, with photos of the plants and packaging. Packaging damage means replacement at no cost. Carrier damage is covered only if you bought shipping insurance.
- Dormant plants. The store says many plants look bare or discoloured from fall to early spring and that this is normal.
- Size. Photos show mature plants, but you receive younger nursery stock in standard containers. Check the container size on each product page.
Shipping and delivery
The Shipping policy says all orders go by FedEx Ground, delivered without a signature, and not to P.O. boxes. Free shipping applies at $99 or more, excluding gift cards, shipping protection and warranty. Orders under $99 pay $24.95.
Timing is where the store's pages disagree. A summer notice says 1 to 3 business days to process, the timeframe section says 2 to 4 days in summer and winter and 4 to 6 in spring and fall, and the quick facts say most orders ship within 3 to 5 business days at peak. FedEx Ground then takes 1 to 5 days. Orders placed Thursday to Sunday may be held until the next week so plants do not sit in a box over a weekend. You can ask for a later ship date in checkout comments.
Optional shipping insurance covers carrier damage, severe delays, lost packages and weather damage. It does not cover theft after delivery. Risk passes to you once the carrier has the package. Terms say changes or cancellations are possible only within 12 hours of purchase or before the shipping confirmation.
Returns and refunds
- Live plants and trees: no returns. The Terms page cites perishability and pest risk. The remedy is the replacement promise, once.
- Wrong plant: the store says it will replace it or give store credit. It will not refund a plant that matches your order, or one you chose by mistake.
- Supplies and hard goods: 60 days, unused, original packaging, customer pays return shipping, no restocking fee.
Refunds for plants are not described. Expect a replacement or credit, not money back.
What shoppers say
Trustpilot (read 26 October 2026): 4.4 out of 5 from 13,913 reviews, with 1,001 in the last 12 months. About 76 percent are 5-star and 10 percent are 1-star. The company replies to about two thirds of negative reviews. Praise centers on healthy plants, careful packaging and fast delivery. Complaints include plants declining after planting, small plants, shipping charges on small orders and replacements, hard-to-reach service, and slow shipping.
BBB: rating A, not accredited (read 26 October 2026). We did not read complaint counts.
ComplaintsBoard: 3.2 from 18 reviews and 13 complaints, with the latest dated comment July 2023 (page read 26 October 2026). Themes were unanswered emails, poorly packed plants and disputes over credit versus refund.
These are customer opinions, not our findings.
Verdict
Garden Goods Direct looks like a genuine nursery with a long track record and a high Trustpilot score at large volume. It is not a furniture or shed retailer. The things to weigh are the no-returns rule on live plants, shipping fees on small orders, and a claim process that depends on photos and tight deadlines.
Checklist before you order
- Confirm the store sells what you want: plants, not furniture or sheds.
- Check your USDA hardiness zone against the product page.
- Read the container size and expected delivered size.
- Plan the planting date, and use the checkout note if you need a later ship date.
- Consider insurance, since carrier damage is covered only with it.
- Photograph the box and plants on arrival and report within 5 days.
- Plant in the ground, since pots void the promise.
- Keep your order email, and use the same address for claims.
What we could not confirm
- The refund process for plants, which the pages do not describe.
- Which support email is correct, since pages list support@ and custserv@.
- BBB complaint counts and Reddit discussion (none found).
- Whether the 5-day damage window or 30-day promise applies to a given arrival problem.
- The price of insurance and the optional warranty.
- Return address and refund timing for supplies.
