Some of the most interesting skincare, hair care and fragrance comes from small, independent brands. They often focus on one thing and do it well. But because anyone can launch a beauty line online, it pays to check a few things before you order.
Signs of a well-run indie brand
- A full ingredient list on every product. No list, no purchase.
- A real company behind it. Look for a company name, a registered address and a way to contact a person.
- Clear product details: size, how to use it, shelf life after opening (the open-jar symbol, such as "12M"), and who it's for.
- Realistic language. Cosmetics can moisturise, cleanse and improve how skin looks. Products that promise to cure or treat medical conditions are making claims cosmetics aren't allowed to make.
- Consistent reviews across the brand's site and independent sources, including some that aren't five stars.
Check where it ships from
Independent brands often ship internationally. Before ordering, check:
- Delivery times and cost to your country.
- Import duties and taxes. Orders from abroad can add charges on delivery. Our international shipping and customs guide explains how to avoid surprises.
- Whether the formula is sold in your market. Rules on cosmetic ingredients differ between countries, and reputable brands make sure their products comply where they sell.
Buy authentic products
Popular indie brands are sometimes copied. To make sure you get the real thing:
- Buy from the brand's own website or a retailer it lists as a stockist.
- Be wary of prices far below the brand's own site, especially on marketplaces.
- Check that packaging, batch codes and spelling match what the brand shows.
Try before you commit
Indie brands often sell minis, samples or discovery sets. They're the cheapest way to find out whether a texture, scent or formula suits you. Many also run loyalty programmes that reward repeat orders, so a small first purchase can pay off later.
The short version
A good independent brand shows you everything: ingredients, company details, realistic claims and fair policies. If any of those are missing, keep looking. There's no shortage of great small brands that do it properly.
