A bedtime story is one of the easier things to buy online, and one of the easier things to get slightly wrong. The age range on a listing is the seller's guess, a "digital product" can mean several different file types, and a story read from a tablet is screen time. A few checks before you order make a better choice.

Match the story to the child, not just the age on the listing
Sellers give an age range, but children differ in attention span and in what they enjoy. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists, among the things most children do by 5 years, that they answer simple questions about a book or story after you read it to them, tell a story with at least two events, and pay attention for 5 to 10 minutes during an activity such as story time. If your child is younger or still building those skills, a shorter story may suit better. If a listing does not say how long the story is, that is a reason to ask the seller before you buy.

Read together, and talk about the story
For 5-year-olds, the CDC's tips include reading to your child and asking questions such as "What is happening in the picture?" and "What do you think will happen next?" It also suggests encouraging a child to "read" by looking at the pictures and telling the story, and reading books and talking about the feelings the characters have and why. A story with clear pictures and a few pauses for talking gives you more to work with than a long block of text.
Find out the format before you pay
A digital story can be a PDF, an e-book file, a set of images or an audio file, and the listing does not always say. Before you pay, look for:
- The file type and whether you can print it. If you want a paper copy for bedtime, check that printing is allowed and works.
- The length. Page count or reading time tells you whether it fits one bedtime.
- The language and the illustrations. Is the text in the language you read aloud in, and are the illustrations in color?
- Extras. Some listings include a bonus story or coloring pages. Check what is actually included.
Plan the screen time
A digital story read on a phone or tablet counts as screen time. For a 5-year-old, the CDC advises limiting screen time to no more than 1 hour a day, avoiding screens for 1 to 2 hours before bed, and keeping screens out of the child's bedroom. The CDC also says children of this age need 10 to 13 hours of sleep a day, including naps. If you want to follow that advice at bedtime, a printed copy of the story may suit you better than reading it on a device.

Compare what the stores list
This is what one seller of digital stories lists on its Digistore24 order pages, as we read them on 20 October 2026. The seller does not state a file type, a length or a language for any of them, and the price pages show only a dollar sign without naming the currency.

The two picture books are listed for ages 5 to 7. The fable titles are listed for older children, teens and adults, so check the age range before you choose one for a young child. All seven pages state a 60-day money-back guarantee, processed through Digistore24.
Check the refund terms
For a digital product, the refund terms matter more than usual, because you cannot return a file. The seller's pages say that you can contact the seller within 60 days of purchase for a full refund if you do not find the product valuable or helpful, and that refunds are processed through Digistore24. Read the order page for the exact terms where you live, and keep your receipt. Our guide to refunds and chargebacks explains what to do if a refund does not arrive.
