A personalised gift (a name on a mug, a date engraved on a watch, initials embroidered on a towel) shows you put thought into it. But personalised items are made to order, which means mistakes are costly and returns are rarely possible. A careful five minutes at checkout avoids most problems.
Check the spelling, then check it again
Most personalisation errors come from the order form, not the maker. The seller will usually reproduce exactly what you type.
- Copy names from a reliable source, such as a message from the person, rather than typing from memory.
- Check capital letters, spaces and punctuation. Some sellers print exactly what you enter, including lowercase letters and double spaces.
- Watch out for autocorrect on your phone changing names.
- Dates: the US usually writes month/day/year and the UK day/month/year. "03/04" means different days on each side of the Atlantic. Writing the month as a word avoids confusion.
- Special characters and accents aren't always supported. If a name has one, check the product page or ask before ordering.
- Read it aloud. It's surprisingly good at catching mistakes.
Proof approval: use it if it's offered
Many sellers, especially for engraving, printing and custom designs, send a digital proof before production.
- Check whether a proof is offered and whether you need to request it.
- Look at the proof carefully: spelling, layout, font, size, and where the design sits on the item.
- Remember that approving a proof usually means accepting it. Most sellers won't correct an error you approved.
- Reply promptly. Production often waits for your approval, so a slow reply can delay delivery.
If no proof is offered, use any live preview tool on the product page, and take a screenshot of your order details in case you need them later.
Production times vs delivery times
Personalised items take longer than off-the-shelf products because they're made after you order.
| Stage | What to check |
|---|---|
| Production time | How many working days the seller needs to make the item |
| Proof approval | Whether the clock starts before or after you approve |
| Dispatch | Whether "ships in 3 days" means dispatched or delivered |
| Delivery | Standard vs express options, and the delivery address country |
Add these together, and allow extra time around busy gifting seasons and public holidays. If you're ordering from another country, add time for international delivery and possible customs checks; our international shipping and customs guide explains what can slow a parcel down.
Returns are usually excluded
Because personalised items are made for you, they're commonly excluded from standard returns. In the UK, the usual right to cancel an online order generally doesn't apply to goods made to the customer's specifications. US return rights depend mostly on the seller's own policy. Either way:
- Read the returns policy before you order, not after.
- Faulty or damaged items are different. If the item arrives broken, or the seller made an error that isn't on the proof you approved, you should still be able to ask for a replacement or refund.
- Photograph any problems straight away and contact the seller promptly. If you can't reach an agreement, our guide to refunds and chargebacks explains your options.
Engraving, printing or embroidery: how long will it last?
| Method | Durability | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Engraving (laser or mechanical) | Cut into the surface, so it doesn't wash or rub off | Metal, wood, glass, jewellery, watches |
| Etching | Permanent, often subtle on glass | Glassware, mirrors |
| Printing (including sublimation) | Varies: some prints fade or wear with heavy washing or dishwasher use | Mugs, clothing, photo gifts, cushions |
| Embroidery | Hard-wearing and textured | Towels, bags, clothing |
Check the care instructions. A printed mug may be "hand wash recommended", which matters if it's going to be used every day.
Pick a trustworthy seller
Personalised gifts are popular with small independent makers, which is great for unique pieces. Check reviews (and our tips on spotting fake reviews), look for clear contact details, and run through our checklist for whether an online store is legit.
The short version
Copy names carefully, write dates without ambiguity, approve proofs only after checking every detail, add production and delivery time together, accept that returns are usually excluded, and choose engraving or embroidery when you want the personalisation to last.
