Matter is a standard meant to let smart home devices from different brands work together. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), which runs it, explains the basics in its FAQ and in an article on how a Matter home is put together.

This guide is based on the public sources listed at the end. We have not tested the products or services mentioned.

This is a short reference page. The full guide is Wi-Fi, Cooling and Smart Home Basics.

What it is

Matter is an open smart-home standard from the CSA. The aim is that devices from different brands work together across assistants and platforms. It runs over Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Thread. Setup usually uses a QR or numeric code, often with Bluetooth Low Energy.

Only certified products may carry the Matter logo. Certified models are listed in a public ledger and on the CSA website, and each device carries a certificate used to check that it is genuine.

Key terms

  • Fabric: a private virtual network in the home that connects Matter devices, administrators and controllers. It can span Wi-Fi, Thread and Ethernet.
  • Commissioner: adds a new device after checking it is authentic and assigning network credentials.
  • Thread: a low-power mesh network that uses the same radio type as Zigbee but is IP-based. Thread devices reach the home network through a Thread border router, which is often built into speakers, routers or hubs.
  • Bridge: translates protocols so non-Matter devices, such as Zigbee or Z-Wave gear, can join. Matter does not talk natively to Zigbee devices.

Do you need a hub?

Matter is designed for local control, but a Matter-only device still needs an internet-connected home controller, such as a smart speaker or hub, for control when you are away. The FAQ does not list offline features for each device, so check the product page.

Checklist before buying

  1. Look for the Matter logo and, for Thread devices, whether you already have a border router.
  2. Check that your phone app and assistant are supported.
  3. Check power needs and whether any feature needs a subscription.
  4. Confirm the return window before installing.
  5. Read our smart home security checklist.
